Apple's Biggest Event in Years — iPhone Duo, 18 Pro, Watch Series 12 & Everything Else from September 9, 2026

HARVIC JOHN — 10 MIN READ — SEPTEMBER 15, 2026

Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, 2026 was not a normal iPhone event. It was a reckoning. For years, every major consumer technology company has been circling the foldable phone category — Samsung has dominated it for seven generations, Google entered it with the Pixel Fold, Motorola has shipped flip devices at volume, and countless analysts have asked, year after year, when Apple would move. The answer arrived on stage at Apple Park, delivered by a new CEO, in the form of the iPhone Duo — the most transformational change to iPhone in the product's 19-year history.

But the Duo was not the only story from September 9. John Ternus — formerly Apple's hardware engineering chief, now CEO following Tim Cook's retirement — made his debut on the world's most watched product stage. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max arrived with a variable-aperture camera system and a $100 price increase. The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 got the most significant health platform upgrade in the watch's history. AirPods 5 gained real-time translation. And iOS 27 — shipping September 18 — reimagines what a phone's interface can look like when the screen is 7.6 inches and folds in half. Here is every product, every price, and everything that matters.

iPhone Duo — Apple's First Foldable iPhone

Ternus saved the Duo for last. Everything else on the agenda — the 18 Pro, the watches, the AirPods — was the supporting act. iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original, Apple said in its press release, and unlike most corporate superlatives, this one is defensible. The original iPhone created the smartphone. The iPhone Duo creates the foldable smartphone for an audience of over two billion iOS users who have never owned one.

When open, it's the thinnest iPhone with the largest display ever — 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. The inner display is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with a nano-texture finish specifically engineered to reduce visible reflections at the fold — the crease that has plagued every competing foldable since Samsung's first Galaxy Z Fold. Apple says the crease is minimal. Independent reviewers who have handled pre-production units describe it as the least visible fold line of any competing device. That verdict will be tested properly when units reach consumers on October 23.

The outer display measures 5.4 inches — compact enough to use as a conventional iPhone in one hand when the device is closed. This is the key design insight that separates the Duo from some of its competitors: it is not just a tablet that folds down into something awkwardly large. It is a phone that unfolds into something genuinely useful. The closed form factor is intentionally small, making the transition between phone mode and tablet mode feel like a deliberate choice rather than a necessary compromise.

"iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. It opens up possibilities that feel entirely new yet remarkably familiar."

iPhone Duo — Specs, Camera, and What's Missing

The Duo runs the A20 Pro chip — the same processor in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, built on TSMC's 2nm process — which makes it the most powerful chip Apple has put in any iPhone. Extra memory is particularly useful on the Duo because iOS 27 can display multiple apps simultaneously and because Apple Intelligence and Siri AI increasingly run generative models locally rather than relying entirely on cloud processing. The RAM allocation in the Duo is higher than the standard 18 Pro specifically to support the multitasking use cases the larger inner display enables.

The camera system is a 48MP dual Fusion setup — wide and ultrawide, no telephoto. Drawbacks: no telephoto lens, no LiDAR, no variable aperture. This is the most significant hardware trade-off in the entire device. The iPhone 18 Pro has a variable-aperture triple-camera system with a periscope telephoto. The Duo — which costs $800 more than the 18 Pro — has two cameras and no periscope. The engineering explanation is that a foldable hinge leaves no room for the periscope module architecture. The commercial explanation is that Apple is betting most Duo buyers are purchasing for the screen and the form factor, not the telephoto. Whether that bet holds up when buyers compare the camera spec at $1,999 versus $1,199 will be visible in return rates.

The Duo also supports Spatial Audio recording, Audio Mix, Dolby Vision HDR and Apple's computational photography features including Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 5, Photographic Styles 3, smart focus tracking and Apple Intelligence-powered editing. Apple Pencil with USB-C support is confirmed, coming later in 2026. Storage options run from 256GB through 512GB, 1TB, and an unprecedented 2TB option — making the Duo the first iPhone to offer 2TB of on-device storage.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max — Variable Aperture Changes Photography

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 — $100 more than its predecessor. The Pro Max starts at $1,299, also up $100. The same memory shortage that has raised prices across the entire smartphone market — RAM costs quadrupled in 2026 — has reached the Pro lineup. Apple has confirmed this is a hardware cost adjustment, not a margin expansion.

The headline camera feature is variable aperture — a first for iPhone, and a capability that photography enthusiasts have requested for years. Variable aperture means the lens opening can physically change, allowing the camera to adjust depth of field in real time rather than simulating it through software. At f/1.6 the lens opens wide for low-light performance. At f/2.8 it narrows for greater depth of field in landscape and street photography. This is not a computational trick — it is mechanical engineering in a phone camera, and it represents a genuine step forward in what a smartphone lens can do.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max has the longest battery life in an iPhone at up to 45 hours. The smaller Pro gets 24 hours — a meaningful improvement from 17 Pro's 22 hours. Both models run A20 Pro, gain Apple's new C2 modem (shared with the Duo), and ship in four new colours: Glacier and Burgundy are the standouts, replacing the Desert Titanium and Natural Titanium of the 17 series.

iOS 27 — Redesigned for the Duo, Better for Everyone

Apple announced that iOS 27 will be released later this month — specifically September 18 alongside the Pro models. iOS 27 ships with every device announced at the event and represents the deepest Siri AI integration Apple has shipped. On the Duo, iOS 27 enables genuine side-by-side multitasking — two full apps running simultaneously on the 7.6-inch inner display, each with their own scroll position, interactive elements, and keyboard if needed. This is the use case that justified the Duo's existence as a product category: the ability to read an email while composing a reply, watch a video while taking notes, or follow a recipe while browsing a shopping list without toggling between apps.

For all devices, Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 brings deeper on-device model execution. More generative AI features run locally — without sending data to Apple's servers — than in any previous iOS version. The Privacy Report in iOS 27 now shows which AI features used on-device processing vs. Private Cloud Compute for each request, giving users actual visibility into where their data went.

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 — Health Gets Serious

Apple Watch Series 12 brings a new Health Sensing System with higher-frequency health measurements and Readiness. The Series 12 starts at $399 and is available September 18. The new Health Sensing System increases the frequency of passive health measurements — heart rate, blood oxygen, and temperature sampling — from the current interval-based approach to something closer to continuous monitoring, enabled by more efficient sensor hardware and the new health-focused chip inside the watch.

Readiness — Apple's new holistic health metric that synthesises sleep, activity, heart rate variability, and recovery data into a single daily score — debuts on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 and back-ports to Series 10 and newer via watchOS. It is Apple's answer to WHOOP and Oura Ring's recovery-focused positioning: a daily number that tells you how prepared your body is for exertion, and a set of actionable recommendations attached to it.

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799 gains improved GPS accuracy with dual-frequency L1/L5 tracking, up to 45 hours of outdoor workout battery life, and the same Readiness feature. Apple Watch is listening to your conversations — a new awareness feature on Series 12 and Ultra 4 where Siri AI monitors ambient audio for mentions of health symptoms or medication, prompting the user to log them in the Health app. It is opt-in, processed on-device, and the most proactive health monitoring Apple has built into Watch software to date.

AirPods 5 — Translation in Your Ears

AirPods 5 start at $129 without wireless charging, $149 with. The headline feature is real-time translation — powered by on-device Apple Intelligence, AirPods 5 can translate spoken conversation in real time and deliver it to your ears, with the translated audio playing slightly ahead of the speaker's words. Apple demonstrated it in Mandarin, Spanish, French, and Japanese. The feature works with iPhone 18 Pro and Duo running iOS 27 and uses Apple's own translation models, not a cloud service, which means it works offline.

Beyond translation, AirPods 5 bring improved active noise cancellation, a new Adaptive Audio mode that responds to ambient sound changes faster than AirPods Pro 3, and a redesigned stem that is slightly shorter. They are available September 18 alongside the Pro models.

The Missing iPhone — Standard 18 Pushed to Spring 2027

The standard iPhone 18 will not launch in September 2026, with Apple instead planning to debut it in spring 2027 alongside the iPhone 18e and the iPhone Air 2. This is a significant strategic shift. Apple has never before split its annual iPhone lineup across two calendar events — the September Pro models and a spring standard model — and the decision creates a gap in the lineup that leaves buyers wanting a sub-$1,000 iPhone with no new option until next year. The iPhone 16 remains available at $799, the cheapest currently sold iPhone, and will receive iOS 27. But for the first time since the iPhone X era, Apple's September event has no entry-level or mid-tier new iPhone at all.

The strategic reasoning is visible: Apple wants the Duo to breathe. If a $799 iPhone 18 had launched alongside a $1,999 Duo on the same stage, the price contrast would have dominated the conversation. By staging the lineup, Apple gives the Duo six months to establish itself as a product category before the standard iPhone absorbs media oxygen in spring.

What Apple Got Right

  • iPhone Duo's nano-texture inner display reportedly shows the least visible fold crease of any foldable
  • A20 Pro at 2nm in both Duo and 18 Pro — consistent performance tier across the premium lineup
  • Variable aperture on 18 Pro is a genuine mechanical camera innovation, not a software simulation
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max's 45-hour battery is the longest ever in any iPhone
  • AirPods 5 real-time translation running on-device works offline — a real differentiator from competitors
  • Apple Watch Readiness feature closes the gap with WHOOP and Oura Ring's recovery positioning
  • 2TB storage option on Duo is unprecedented in any iPhone

What Raised Eyebrows

  • No telephoto lens, no LiDAR, no variable aperture on a $1,999 device — camera compromises are real
  • $100 price increase across every Pro model — memory costs hitting Apple buyers directly
  • No standard iPhone 18 until spring 2027 — leaves a £799 gap in the lineup until then
  • Duo pre-orders open October 16, ships October 23 — six weeks after the 18 Pro
  • Apple Pencil support for Duo arriving "later in 2026" — not at launch
  • Battery life on Duo split across two displays — real-world endurance still to be independently tested

Verdict

Apple's September 2026 event is the most significant product launch the company has held since the original iPhone in 2007 — and that is not hyperbole. The iPhone Duo marks Apple's entry into a product category it spent seven years watching Samsung build, refine, and evangelise. It arrives with Apple's signature advantages intact: the most capable mobile chip in the world, the most cohesive operating system designed for its hardware, and an ecosystem of accessories, services, and integrations that no competitor matches. The camera trade-off is real and will matter to some buyers. The $1,999 price is genuinely steep. The six-week gap before it reaches hands will test patience. But the Duo is not a first-generation experiment hedged with asterisks — it is a confident, fully-formed product from a company that learned from seven generations of competitors' mistakes before building its own. John Ternus's first event as CEO could not have been scripted better. The question for Samsung, Google, and everyone else in foldable hardware is the same one they've faced in every other category Apple has entered: what do you do when Apple shows up and does the thing you built, but better?
