MacBook Pro M5 Review — Is It Worth It?

HARVIC JOHN — 7 MIN READ — JAN 1, 2026

Apple's MacBook Pro with the M5 chip is, by almost every measurable standard, the best laptop the company has ever made. It is also, depending on your upgrade history, either the most compelling purchase of the year or a perfectly skippable iteration. The truth, as always with Apple's silicon roadmap, lives somewhere in the middle — and where you land depends entirely on what you're coming from.

The M5 Pro chip is built on TSMC's 3-nanometre process with up to 18 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores, alongside support for up to 64GB of unified memory with 307 GB/s of bandwidth. Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life on the 16-inch model — and reviewers are largely confirming it. Tom's Guide measured 21 hours and 10 minutes in continuous web browsing. CGMagazine recorded 16–20 hours in real-world mixed use. The Verge clocked SSD read speeds of 13.6 GB/s on the 4TB M5 Max configuration — an 86% jump over the previous generation.

What's Actually New

The headline chip improvements are real but incremental for most workloads. CPU performance is up roughly 15% over M4 Pro, and GPU performance is up around 20%. Where the M5 generation genuinely leaps forward is in AI workloads — Apple Intelligence performance is 4x faster than M4, and 8x faster than M1 models, due to Neural Accelerators embedded in every GPU core. For developers, machine learning engineers, and anyone running local AI inference tools, this is a meaningful upgrade. For everyone else, it's a spec sheet number.

What is genuinely exciting is the storage: SSD performance has essentially doubled. The new Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via Apple's N1 chip are real-world improvements, particularly in dense wireless environments. Nano-texture display option is available across more configurations. And storage now starts at 1TB on M5 Pro models — ending the embarrassing 512GB base tier.

"The M5 MacBook Pro refines an already excellent formula, delivering more power, faster storage and improved AI capabilities without compromising the design professionals already trust." — CGMagazine

The Gaming Story

Gaming on macOS has historically been a footnote. That footnote is getting longer. The M5 Pro delivered a 46% improvement in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080×1200 on Ultra settings compared to the M4 Pro — 66.5 fps versus 41.5. Similar gains appeared across Death Stranding, Stray, and Resident Evil 4. Apple's Metal API is closing the gap with DirectX 12, and the growing library of native macOS ports reflects developer confidence in the platform's install base. Gaming on a MacBook Pro in 2026 is no longer a punchline. It is still not a gaming PC. But for casual and indie gaming alongside professional work, it has become surprisingly capable.

Who Should Buy It

Buy It If

  • Coming from M1 or M2 — the leap is massive
  • You need AI workloads, ML, or 8K video editing
  • Battery life is non-negotiable for your workflow
  • You want the best-built laptop on the market

Skip It If

  • You bought an M4 Pro — improvements are incremental
  • You need serious gaming performance
  • You want Windows app compatibility
  • Price is a primary concern over ,699
Final Verdict

The MacBook Pro M5 Pro is the best professional laptop money can buy in 2026. If you're on M1 or older Intel, stop reading and buy one. If you're on M3 or M4, wait for M6 unless AI workflows are your livelihood.
